Do It Parent Coaching

Why Is It Called “Do It”?

I was what we now call a very “independent thinker” as a toddler. I wanted to do things MY way. Whenever an adult tried to help me complete a task, I insisted that “Debbie do it!” The more difficult the task, the more likely my house would be filled with shouts of “Debbie Do It”. Before long, my uncle gave me the nickname Do It. Almost 50 years later, family members still lovingly refer to me that way.

When setting up my coaching practice, this nickname reminded me that, even at a young age, children know what they want and can often express it quite clearly. Indeed, our brightest and most independent-minded children can be the most challenging for parents – it’s so hard not to feel stuck in a battle of wills.

We don’t always have time to help a child “work through” or “process” big feelings. Instead, we start to change our parenting in order to avoid our child’s upset. We may rearrange the lives of everyone else in the family (sleep habits, what we eat, where we go, who we see …) in an effort to keep things copacetic. This can create stress on our relationships with partners, friends, our other children and extended family. As parents, we start to feel guilty and overwhelmed. I can help break this pattern.

Instead of spending all of our energy trying to change a child’s behavior, we’ll shift paradigms. I’ll guide you through ways you can change YOUR behavior as parents, including what you can do before a child starts struggling and how we respond when she does.

As a child, I always wanted to do things on my own. Your parenting doesn’t have to be that way!  Let’s figure this out together.
